Technical Education South Africa: Leap School Handover in Crossroads & Langa

The Hands On Foundation, in partnership with Leap Schools, completed the handover of two new technical faculties at Leap Schools 1 & 2 located in Crossroads and Langa. This builds on the same model first introduced at Wynberg Boys High School, which has now been extended into township communities through Leap 1 in Crossroads and Leap 2 in Langa. Together, these sites are currently serving more than 100 students. The purpose of the day was to open the completed facility, introduce the programme, and show how it will be used by students.

What Was Delivered

The facility is designed to support practical technical education from an early stage. Students are introduced to core technical subjects such as engineering fundamentals, electrical systems, construction level skills, and technical drawing. This provides a structured base and allows students to understand how different technical disciplines connect. This is followed by hands-on application, where students work directly with tools and equipment used in industry. This shifts learning from theory into practice and allows students to engage with the material in a more direct way. Students are also exposed to real work environments through structured opportunities during school holidays. This gives them insight into how these skills are used outside of school and helps them understand workplace expectations.

Programme Structure and Participation

Across Leap 1 in Crossroads and Leap 2 in Langa, more than 100 students are currently participating in the programme. This level of participation shows clear demand for technical education when it is introduced in a practical and accessible way. The programme is designed to connect learning to real outcomes. Students are not only introduced to technical subjects, but are also given the opportunity to apply what they learn and understand how it relates to future work. This approach supports clearer decision making at school level and allows students to begin forming a view of potential career paths earlier.

“The greatest inhibitor of progress in our country is the divide in terms of access.” – John Gilmore, Director and Founder of LEAP Institute

This project directly addresses that point by placing technical education into schools where students would not normally have access to it.

What This Work Shows

This rollout from Wynberg Boys High School to Crossroads and Langa shows that the model can be applied across different school environments. Students engage with practical learning quickly and consistently. Early exposure to technical subjects helps students form clearer views of their future and understand how education connects to work. The video content from the day shows how the programme operates in practice. It captures students using the space, interacting with the equipment, and engaging with the structure of the programme.
